Think about

Who needs help, and why?
Why is the helper surprising?
How do the characters work together?

Extend: Let the helper need something too, so the kindness goes both ways.

02 Persuasive Years 3–9

Kindness Award

Kind actions can make a big difference to other people. Choose someone who deserves a Kindness Award, and write to convince a reader why they should receive it.

Think about

Who will you nominate? They could be from your family, school or community.
What kind actions have they done?
Why do those actions deserve to be recognised?

Support: Describe one specific kind action in detail before you start writing.
Extend: Show the effect of the person’s kindness on someone else, not just the action itself.

Name a kind action

Ask students to describe one kind action they have seen, given or received. Push for the detail: what exactly happened, and what changed afterwards?
Pick a direction

For a story, pair a surprising helper with a real problem. For persuasion, choose someone who deserves a Kindness Award and the actions that prove it.
Show, then tell

Have students find one sentence that names a feeling and rewrite it as an action or detail the reader can see.
