Writing Boost is a writing assessment and feedback platform for Australian schools, with Spelling Boost included. Students write, get feedback against the NAPLAN writing criteria and redraft. Teachers see what to teach next. School leaders see each year level class beside class, and system leaders see across their schools.

Narrative and persuasive writing use their respective NAPLAN criteria, with adaptations for other genres, so students practise against the criteria NAPLAN applies in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Teachers interpret the feedback, and schools choose whether students see scores. Results are not official NAPLAN results or proficiency predictions. We checked Writing Boost against 52 officially marked NAPLAN scripts it hadn’t seen before, narrative and persuasive: 98% of its criterion marks were within one point of the official mark. Yes. Every class is marked on the same criteria, so a shared year-level task gives your teams a common reference point and a shared language for writing. Read the marked work together, compare it with your own judgements and agree what to teach. Teachers still make the call.

It sits inside your writing program rather than replacing it. Teach and model the skill, let students write, then use the feedback for the redraft and the class results to plan the next lesson, for the whole class or a small group. Beyond narrative and persuasive, teachers can set informative, procedure, explanation and poetry tasks on adapted criteria, for writing across learning areas.

Students remain the authors. Writing Boost provides assessment, feedback and prompts that help students think about their work. The student makes the decisions and writes the next draft.

Yes, as Year 3 students still do in the NAPLAN writing test. Students give their handwritten pages to their teacher. Teachers capture the pages, review and correct the transcript against the original, then submit the work for marking. Students can read the feedback when it is ready.

Writing Boost and Spelling Boost, teacher and leadership access, and guided onboarding are included in one annual school plan. Spelling Boost teaches spelling as sounds, letter patterns, word parts and meaning. Students hear each word in a sentence and win back missed words with clues before the answer. Misspelt words in their marked writing join the same practice, and teachers see what each student actually wrote.
