Writing Boost

Formative feedback on every piece of student writing

Narrative and persuasive writing, marked on the NAPLAN criteria within minutes: one next step for each student, and class evidence to plan explicit teaching.

From prompt to marking: A teacher sets class 5B an illustrated prompt, Trapped in the Game. Leo types his story on screen and Aanya writes hers on paper, and both arrive in the editor, ready for marking.

For students

Write it. Read the feedback. Have another go.

  1. An illustrated prompt or the teacher’s own task, with writing tools the teacher can switch on.

    Browse the prompts
  2. A score on each criterion, what works, and one thing to work on in a passage the student can find.

  3. Students rework a passage in their own words and compare the two drafts. The original scores stay as they were.

How the marking works

A score is the easy part. Here’s what’s behind it.

Spelling marked by rule

On 41 officially marked exemplar scripts, the spelling mark matches the official one on 36, and is within one mark on all 41.
  • Marking, then feedback

Each criterion is scored against the NAPLAN marking guide, with a reason. The feedback is written from that marking.

  • Handwriting kept as written

Read word for word, misspellings and all, and shown beside the page so a misread word can be fixed.

  • No chatting with the AI

It marks and writes feedback; students can’t prompt it. A school can pause all AI processing at any time.

  • Teachers have the last word

If your school switches it on, a teacher can adjust a score with a reason. The original marks are kept.

Questions

What teachers ask before they start.

Does Writing Boost write for students?

Students remain the authors. Planning tools, questions and feedback support their thinking; students choose the words and write the next draft.

Which writing criteria does it use?

Narrative and persuasive writing use their respective NAPLAN criteria. Other genres use adapted criteria. Scores are not official NAPLAN results or predictions of proficiency levels. Writing Boost is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by ACARA.

How should teachers use AI feedback?

Read the original work alongside the feedback. Check whether a suggestion fits the passage, task and learner, then choose a teaching focus. AI feedback can make mistakes; teachers interpret it, model the skill and check students’ understanding.

Can teachers change a mark?

Yes, if your school switches teacher score overrides on. Each change needs a short reason, the original marks are kept and can be restored, and the student sees that their teacher reviewed the piece. The written feedback stays as it was, and the teacher can add a note of their own.

Does revision change the original assessment?

No. The student’s original piece and assessment scores stay unchanged. A learning revision records the changes made in response to feedback. Use a later, comparable task to explore independent application.
