Spelling Boost

Spelling taught as sounds, patterns and meaning.

Short, focused practice: hear the word in its sentence, try it, see what the spelling teaches, and come back to the words that got away.

3 step-by-step guidesFor teachers and students

IllustrativeA student hears “bright” read in a sentence and spells it b-r-i-t-e. The feedback keeps the sounds they spelled correctly and asks which letters spell the long i sound; on their second go they write b-r-igh-t.

Step by step

Spelling Boost, step by step

Start a spelling practice routine

Use audio, context, and another attempt to build understanding.
  1. Introduce a small, focused spelling task that fits your teaching program.
  2. Encourage students to listen to the word and its sentence context before attempting it.
  3. After feedback, discuss the useful spelling pattern and give students another opportunity to practise.

Explore more than the spelling of a word

Connect meanings, word parts, and related words.
  1. Choose a word from current writing or spelling practice.
  2. Explore its meaning, useful word parts, and related words. Ask students what connections they notice.
  3. Use the word in a new sentence so students can connect spelling practice with their own writing.

Troubleshoot spelling audio

Check a few common causes when a word cannot be heard.
  1. Check the device volume, speaker or headphone connection, and whether the browser tab is muted.
  2. Try audio from another trusted source on the same device to see whether the problem is specific to Writing Boost.
  3. If only Writing Boost audio is affected, note the task, browser, and device, then contact support. Avoid including student details in screenshots.

The short version

Good to know.

  • Hear it in context

Students listen to the word and its sentence before they attempt it.

  • Win missed words back

A rematch shows a student can spell a missed word again. The original task score stays as it was.

  • More than the spelling

Explore a word’s meaning, its useful parts and the words related to it.
