Keep the actual response

A list of incorrect words does not show how a student approached them. Keep their written attempts and look for repeated features. For example, compare what happens when endings are added to several related words.

Check before you generalise

One response is a clue, not a settled explanation. Ask the student how they chose the spelling, try another example, and compare with classroom work. Use that evidence to plan explicit instruction and a later check.
