Give tricky spelling words another chance

Use a short revisit to help students think about what they missed and what to try next.

Revisit with a purpose

Choose a small number of words from recent work. Ask students to identify the part they want to remember, then spell the word and use it in a sentence. Discuss the strategy as well as the result.

Notice independent use

Look for the word or pattern in later writing. A correct practice attempt is useful evidence, but using the spelling independently gives you another perspective. Return to explicit teaching when a difficulty persists.
